Have you ever thought that paying your taxes could help you look better in Eorzea? In a surprising move, Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward has partnered with Square Enix to turn tax payments into a chance to earn great rewards in Final Fantasy 14.

If you live in Japan, the country’s “Furusato Nozei” (Hometown Tax) program just got an exciting update for gaming fans. Now, instead of just getting local food or crafts, you can earn popular game cosmetics by fulfilling your civic duties.

What is the Furusato Nozei System?

For those outside of Japan, the Furusato Nozei system is a government initiative that allows taxpayers to “donate” a portion of their residence tax to specific municipalities—not just the one they currently live in. In return, the municipality sends the taxpayer a gift, or “return gift,” often featuring local specialties.

While these gifts usually consist of regional delicacies like Wagyu beef, rice, or local crafts, Shibuya Ward is leaning into its status as a tech and culture hub by offering a digital bounty for the Final Fantasy 14 community.

The Loot: What Can You Get?

Shibuya Ward is offering six distinct reward packs. If you’ve been eyeing the Online Store but haven’t pulled the trigger, this might be the most “productive” way to expand your collection.

Here is what is currently on the table:

  • Megashiba Mount: The adorable, oversized canine mount that every Warrior of Light needs.

  • Collegiate Attire Sets (Skirt or Slacks): Perfect for that “Scholar of Eorzea” aesthetic.

  • Magitek Costume Set: For those who prefer a more industrial, armored look.

  • 4-Piece Dance Emote Set: Because you need to celebrate your raids in style.

  • 5-Pack of Fantasia Potions: For when you just need a new look (or a new race) for your character.

Donation Tiers for Reference:

Depending on which items you want, the required donation amounts range from 7,000 Yen to 17,000 Yen. If you’re a completionist looking to grab all six sets, you’re looking at a total donation of 58,000 Yen.

Note: While the estimated value of these items on the official store is roughly $88 USD, these rewards are intended as a “bonus” for your tax contribution to the Shibuya community.

Is This the Future of MMO Cosmetics?

Square Enix is doing something interesting. They are not just selling digital items; they are also getting involved in local government. While we shouldn’t expect the IRS to give free loot boxes for on-time tax filings anytime soon, it shows how digital and real-world assets are coming together.

If you live in Japan and pay your taxes, getting these items makes sense. For those of us living abroad, we might have to stick with regular Online Store sales or ask our local city councils to offer some Final Fantasy rewards too.
