Josh Jacobs Legal Update: Packers RB Released as Brown County Investigation Continues

The Green Bay Packers are facing uncertainty after a legal issue involving their star running back, Josh Jacobs. As the team gets ready for the upcoming season, the Brown County District Attorney’s office is conducting an ongoing investigation into the claims made against the 28-year-old player.

The Current Status of the Investigation

Josh Jacobs was released from jail on Wednesday after being booked by the Hobart-Lawrence Police Department. He was released because the Brown County District Attorney’s office is not ready to decide on formal charges.

District Attorney David L. Lasee explained that the office is asking for more investigation. Authorities think more evidence may come to light, which could affect whether any criminal charges are filed and what those charges may be.

Legal Defense Response

Jacobs, represented by attorneys David Chesnoff, Richard Schonfeld, and Clarence Duchac, has consistently denied the allegations. Following his release, his legal team expressed confidence in the situation, stating:

“We are extremely pleased that Josh has been released from custody and that no criminal charges have been filed against him. We remain confident that, once all of the evidence is gathered and evaluated, it will confirm that no charges should be brought against Josh in the future.”

Impact on the Packers Depth Chart

The timing of this investigation has coincided with the Green Bay Packers’ OTAs (Organized Team Activities). During Wednesday’s practice session, head coach Matt LaFleur addressed the media but remained firm in the organization’s stance, stating they would “let the process play out.”

The Packers are now forced to evaluate their running back depth chart should Jacobs remain unavailable. During recent practices, the rotation shifted to accommodate his absence:

  • Chris Brooks and Pierre Strong Jr.: These players handled the majority of the snaps with the first-team offense during recent sessions.

  • MarShawn Lloyd: The talented back, who has faced injury challenges over the past two seasons, participated in individual drills but did not take team snaps.

With Jacobs—a first-team All-Pro selection in 2022—potentially sidelined, the Packers are looking closely at their remaining options. LaFleur acknowledged the fluidity of the situation, noting, “I think a lot’s going to happen between now and then,” when asked about the possibility of playing the season without their primary starter.

Josh Jacobs: Career Context

Since joining the Green Bay Packers in 2024, Jacobs has become a key player on the team. Last season, he had a strong performance, gaining 1,211 yards and scoring 14 touchdowns in 15 games. He has made the Pro Bowl three times, which keeps him in the spotlight for fans and analysts following the Packers.

As the legal situation in Brown County develops, the NFL is closely watching all updates. Meanwhile, the Packers are focusing on keeping stability as they gather and assess the facts of the case.
