Before you spend a lot of money on a new couch, I have a tip: you can easily refresh your furniture for much less. Knowing how to restuff couch cushions will change your living room experience.

In this guide, I will show you how to refinish your seat and back cushions, clean the fabric, and make your couch feel “like new” again.

Why You Should Consider Restuffing

It’s easy to feel defeated when a favorite piece of furniture starts failing. However, the foam core is usually the only thing that has worn out. The frame and fabric are likely perfectly fine! By replacing the foam, you are saving money, keeping waste out of landfills, and preserving a piece of furniture that has served your family well.

Phase 1: Measuring for Perfection

Don’t rush this part! Accurate measurements are the difference between a professional look and a lumpy mess.

  1. Measure the middle: Using a sewing tape measure, measure from left to right, and back (zipper side) to front.

  2. Determine thickness: Measure the top-to-bottom height of the cushion.

  3. The “Golden Rule”: Add one inch to all your measurements.

Why add an inch? Your new foam needs to be slightly larger than the cover to ensure a tight, full fit without unsightly wrinkles. This also helps create a “doming” effect, which mimics the look of a high-end, store-bought cushion.

Phase 2: Sourcing the Right Materials

Most standard fabric stores don’t carry the heavy-duty, high-density foam you need for a couch. I recommend checking your local yellow pages or Google Maps for an upholstery shop.

Your Shopping List:

  • High-Density Foam Core: Cut to your measurements.

  • Dacron Batting: This is essential! It wraps around the foam to provide that soft, “cloud-like” initial give when you sit down.

  • Foam Adhesive: To bond the batting to the foam.

Tip: Take one of your old cushion covers with you to the upholstery shop. The pros there are usually happy to help you select the right firmness.

Phase 3: The Refresh Process

Cleaning the Covers

Before stuffing, remove the old inserts. Zip the covers closed (this prevents threads from getting everywhere in your washer!) and wash them according to the care tags. I prefer hanging them to dry to prevent any potential shrinking.

Wrapping the Foam

  1. Lay your foam pad on a clean surface.

  2. Spray the surface with adhesive and align your Dacron batting.

  3. Wrap the batting around the sides, leaving the zipper side bare (you don’t want the batting to interfere with the zipper!).

The “Workout” (Stuffing the Cushions)

This is the part that might get a few expletives out of you! Because we added that extra inch of foam, it will be a tight fit.

  • Technique: Insert one corner, pull the cover halfway up, then compress the other side to tuck it in.

  • Pro Tip: This is much easier with a partner. One person can hold the cover taut while the other guides the foam into the corners.

Restoring Back Cushions

Back cushions usually don’t need firm foam; they need fluff. I recommend buying a large bag of loose polyfill.

  1. Open the back cushion case.

  2. Stuff the corners first.

  3. Add handfuls of fill, working your way toward the zipper.

  4. Zip it up in small, 6-inch increments, adjusting the fill as you go to ensure a handsome, even shape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use memory foam instead of regular upholstery foam? I don’t recommend using memory foam for seat cushions. It does not provide the necessary “push-back” support for sitting every day and tends to stay compressed over time. Instead, choose High-Density (HD) Polyurethane Foam. It is designed to keep its shape under weight for many years.

What is the “firmness” rating, and which one should I choose? When you buy foam, you’ll see terms like “Firm,” “Medium,” or “Soft.” For seat cushions, choose Firm or High-Density foam. Keep in mind that your body weight will make the cushion feel softer after a few months, so starting with a firm option helps it stay comfortable over time.

Help! My new foam is slightly too big. Can I trim it? If the foam feels too tight, you can trim it easily with an electric carving knife. It cuts through the foam easily. Just take your time and use a straight edge to keep your cuts clean and even.

How do I prevent the new foam from shifting inside the cover? If your cushion slides forward when you sit down, try using non-slip rug pad material. Cut it to size and place it under the foam inside the cover. Also, check that your foam measurements are correct. Following the “extra inch” rule usually helps create enough friction to keep the foam in place.

Are there eco-friendly alternatives to polyester polyfill for back cushions? If you’re looking for a more eco-friendly option, consider using natural latex shredded fill or recycled cotton batting. These materials create a nice, full look while being better for the environment than traditional synthetic fillers.

Is it worth fixing a couch that has a broken internal spring? Restuffing your couch can make it more comfortable, but it won’t fix any structural problems. If you feel a broken metal spring or notice a sagging wooden slat, check the bottom of the couch. You can often find replacement webbing or zig-zag springs at hardware stores, but this is a more advanced task. If the frame is cracked, it might be time to get a new sofa.

How much does it cost to refill sofa cushions? I spent about $200 on high-quality materials for my couch, which has 5 top cushions and 5 bottom cushions. This is much cheaper than getting a new sofa!

How long does it take? Expect to spend about 4 hours for the seat cushions. It’s a great weekend project.

Should I just buy a new couch? If the frame is not broken and the fabric is not completely ruined, restuffing is usually the better option. It is more sustainable and costs less.
