For over seventy years, she has been the silent spark of Disney’s magic. When we think of Tinker Bell, we think of the feisty, golden-haired pixie who graces the Magic Kingdom sky every night. But while the character is a digital and hand-drawn icon, the heartbeat behind her movements was very human.

It is with deep sadness that we share the news that Margaret Kerry passed away at 97 on June 11, 2026, in Wilmington, North Carolina, following a courageous battle with lung cancer. She leaves behind a legacy that transformed animation history forever.

More Than Just a Model: The Art of the Pantomime

Many fans of Disney films think Tinker Bell is just a character created by artists. However, her personality—filled with sass, curiosity, and grace—came from months of hard work on a soundstage in Burbank.

In the early 1950s, Disney animators wanted to give their silent fairy real life. They chose Margaret Kerry for this task. After a successful audition with animator Marc Davis, Kerry had an unusual job: she had to bring Tinker Bell to life without speaking.

For six to nine months, Kerry acted on an empty stage, often in a bathing suit and using little more than props like a large wire-frame keyhole or oversized scissors. When Tinker Bell falls backward into a dresser drawer in Peter Pan, you are not just seeing a drawing. You are witnessing Kerry’s actual performance, as she threw herself onto a thin mattress to show that perfect look of surprise and delight.

A Life of Enchantment

Margaret Kerry’s most famous role is in Peter Pan, but her life reflects a rich history in Hollywood and beyond. Born Margaret McCarty in 1929, she showed strength and creativity throughout her life. She started as a child star in Our Gang comedy shorts, then helped create sitcoms like The Ruggles. She also did many voice acting roles in popular shows like Clutch Cargo and Space Angel.

In her later years, Kerry became a motivational speaker, radio host, and author. Her autobiography, Tinker Bell Talks: Tales of a Pixie Dusted Life, gives fans a special look at the woman who brought the world’s most famous pixie to life.

A Legacy That Never Fades

For the 100th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company, the ballet shoes Kerry wore during the original Tinker Bell reference filming were placed on display at The Walt Disney Family Museum. They served as a tangible reminder that magic is often created by the simplest, most human efforts.

Margaret Kerry once described the experience of watching Peter Pan for the first time and seeing her own movements reflected in the light of the screen. “It was enchanting,” she said. “It had been a blessing.”

As we remember her today, it is clear that the blessing was entirely ours. Every time a child looks up at the fireworks and sees that golden trail across the sky, they are seeing the soul, the humor, and the spirit of Margaret Kerry.

Rest in peace, dear pixie. You truly gave us a life touched by magic.
